robert polidori

Black & white photography can be striking, but photographer Robert Polidori enters a completely different realm with his vivid, detailed, and engrossing photos. The Montreal native's photographs have such a high degree of detail it seems similar to high definition television and movies, where every tiny blemish can be seen. Likewise, Polidori's work seizes not only the atmosphere of the subject, but also more minute elements like peeling wallpaper on the abandonded nurseries in Chernobyl or a remaining Southern Comfort advertisment on the wall of a living room that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Some of Polidori's work is currently on display at the Musee d'Art Contemporain de Montreal, he has numerous books of his work in various countries and cities, and his work is often published in The New Yorker magazine and Vogue.

cigarettes & alcohol

AMC's Mad Men overthrew cable television three seasons ago when it first premiered. Such exquisitely written and directed shows are usually reserved for premium channels like HBO and Showtime. Mad Men reveals the grittiness and corruption of an era that is usually idealized for its white-picket fences, perfectly groomed families, and wholesomeness. But Matthew Weiner, the show's creator, explores the generation's infidelity, deceit, restlessness, and even alcoholism. Some of these are done more subtly than others. While the men on Madison Avenue are constantly cheating on their wives and making lewd comments to their secretaries, they are also always drinking and smoking. Mad Men's themes are perceptible in both the character's actions and inactions. The sets of the show are also magnificent; transporting the viewer into the venal offices of the ad men or to the restless housewife's domicile. The Golden Globes exemplify the show's popularity, Mad Men has won numerous awards in the last two years, including best television drama. The show is definitely one of the few things on the tube that doesn't make you feel as though your brain is leaking out of your ear.

urban bikes

urban outfitters has done clothes, housewear, books, art, and apartmentwear.
but apparently they're still bored because they've moved on to bikes.

yes, now urban outfitters has created a line of custom made bikes. you have the freedom to chose the color of everything from the frame to the chain. but is $399 too much for bike color freedom and staying green?

your choice. design your own here.

away we go

The theme of Sam Mendes' newest film, Away We Go.
Starring Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski.
Written by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida.

Just because she's likes the same bizzaro crap you do doesn't mean she's your soul mate

(500) days of summer
a somewhat refreshing, albeit saddening, love story (though the film stresses it is not a love story, "it's a story about love"). though in typical hollywood fashion, there is of course some sort of audience-pleasing redemption that's a little unbelievable. definitely worth seeing, a good summer flick. and if you end up hating the film, there's no way you could hate the music.

I hid under your porch because I love you.

How is it that animated films have such a way of pulling at our heartstrings? I've fallen in love alongside Belle and Arielle and Aladdin and even Simba. And now Pixar's done it too. The studio's newest film, Up, is not only a lesson in adventure in fun and the laughs along the way, but also deep love. Though I laughed throughout much of the film, it had extremely sad moments. The film was about the deepest, truest love, but what happens when that love is done. I won't go any further, but if you're above 12 years old, there's a heartfelt message in the film about true love.

reunited and it feels so good

It's been two years since DispatchZimbabwe, Dispatch's epic reunion concert at Madison Square Garden that sold out two shows within fifteen minutes of going on sale. Well, the band is doing it again. Only this time with only a week's notice and at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Dispatch will perform an acoustic concert for Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai of Zimbabwe. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (6/5) at 10am. Dispatch (and Chad Urmston's current band State Radio) have done a good job with publicizing the concert on such short notice. I haven't decided if I'm going to buy a ticket yet, though I am quite inclined to try. Mostly because I am curious to see how long it takes Dispatch to sell out the 1,100 seated Eisenhower Theatre. Five minutes?

Try your luck: tickets.
