The Tallest Man on Earth: Weather of a Killing Kind

"NOW THERE IS SOMETHIN' IN THE WIND
HERE IS A WEATHER OF A KILLIN' KIND"

Everything is Going to be Alright: The ACE Hotel

I'm still somewhat of a newb to New York but take pride in my personal discoveries, even if they may not be cutting edge to the hippest echelon of New Yorkers.

Thanks to my rad job, I recently had the pleasure of spending some solid time at the ACE Hotel. Though situated in one of my least favorite areas of Manhattan, the hotel emanates vibes of Shoreditch, London. It's dark, usually loud, and quite a scene. But most of the clientele seems not to notice or to care as they furiously type away on their Macbooks and drink coffee (courtesy of Stumptown, and very well priced). Most nights though there is a house or guest DJ/band playing and one of the downstair lounges often hosts special events, including film screenings.

ACE is flanked by the even more fabulous, including an Opening Ceremony store that connects to the lobby (you won't find I <3 NYC tees here), The Breslin, and The John Dory. All of the hotel's amenities, including a photobooth, give visitors little reason to leave...and why should they? They're still in Midtown.

1969

poorly fitting jeans, old jeans that sag after wearing them for five minutes, and outdated jeans are simply the worst. jeans should be your go to on a bad day; they should make you feel put together but comfortable. jeans, now that i'm thankfully far out of my prep school days, are a necessary staple in my wardrobe. but last weekend i came to the realization - my favorite black jeans look more like the color of a fresh bruise and the hole in my blue jeans has become unsightly -- i needed new jeans. after being sorely disappointed with numerous designer brands, i thought, "why not try Gap?" always a good go-to circa 2002, right? well give me 1969 because Gap's soho "1969 Store" is incredible. they've done away with Gap's normal reflectively bright white walls for light wood, granite, and plants - and have decorated with more than anything, denim. the store is sleek - think Apple and denim's love child. it's a jean store that happens to sell some of other essentials (sweaters, shirts, etc.). i fell in love with two pairs that i'm extremely happy with, and i was far from the only one. every woman i saw trying on denim bought a pair. looks like Gap is back on the radar, but with only two 1969 stores in the country, they still think they have their work cut out for them.

ADELE: Set Fire to the Rain

on repeat now:

Tacombi // Nolita

TACOMBI @ FONDA NOLITA.
267 Elizabeth Street, NYC

Literally stumbled upon this garage taqueria on the way to a different bar on Friday night. We never made it to the other place because Tacombi was too intriguing to keep walking past. Authentic Mexican food is cooked and served out of a vintage Volkswagon van (is van food the new truck food?),  horchata and aqua de jamaica is dispensed out of huge glass jars, and the cute orange faced mascot of Lupita soda winks at you from the whitewash wall.  The clientele and atmosphere was more laid back than most downtown spaces on a Friday night, but everyone was in good spirits sipping Mexican beer and eating their delectably good looking $3.69 tacos. I stuck only to horchata but will be back first chance I get for some poblanos -- dinner next weekend? Or breakfast?

moving into fall

LABOR DAY HAS CREPT UP ON ME AT AN ALARMING RATE. I LOOK BACK AT THIS SUMMER AND AM NOT QUITE SURE WHAT I DID EXACTLY. AND WHILE PART OF ME IS ANXIOUS AT THE IDEA OF NOT GOING BACK TO SCHOOL, ANOTHER PART JUMPS UP AND DOWN AT THIS NEW(ISH) FREEDOM AND MY FAVORITE SEASON.

MORNINGS AND EVENINGS ARE COOLER NOW, AND THAT CRISP BUT SUNNY FEELING PENETRATES MY LUNGS. HERE'S TO HOPING THE FALL FEELS SOMETHING LIKE THIS:

Au Revoir, iTunes

I requested an invitation from Spotify on a whim, not knowing much about it. I downloaded the new music application on Friday - and I am already completely obsessed. Get it now. No, seriously, get it now. This is music access in a form similar to iTunes, but far superior. You can listen to millions of songs for free as long as you're connected to the internet, which we are 24 hours of the day anyway. No more 30 second clips from iTunes, no more skipping Pandora songs and listening to ads, no more fear that I'm going to get arrested for downloading Britney's newest single. Spotify is the raddest thing around.

So, thank you Daniel Ek!
