(500) days of summer

a somewhat refreshing, albeit saddening, love story (though the film stresses it is not a love story, "it's a story about love"). though in typical hollywood fashion, there is of course some sort of audience-pleasing redemption that's a little unbelievable. definitely worth seeing, a good summer flick. and if you end up hating the film, there's no way you could hate the music.

How is it that animated films have such a way of pulling at our heartstrings? I've fallen in love alongside Belle and Arielle and Aladdin and even Simba. And now Pixar's done it too. The studio's newest film, Up, is not only a lesson in adventure in fun and the laughs along the way, but also deep love. Though I laughed throughout much of the film, it had extremely sad moments. The film was about the deepest, truest love, but what happens when that love is done. I won't go any further, but if you're above 12 years old, there's a heartfelt message in the film about true love.

It's been two years since DispatchZimbabwe, Dispatch's epic reunion concert at Madison Square Garden that sold out two shows within fifteen minutes of going on sale. Well, the band is doing it again. Only this time with only a week's notice and at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Dispatch will perform an acoustic concert for Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai of Zimbabwe. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (6/5) at 10am. Dispatch (and Chad Urmston's current band State Radio) have done a good job with publicizing the concert on such short notice. I haven't decided if I'm going to buy a ticket yet, though I am quite inclined to try. Mostly because I am curious to see how long it takes Dispatch to sell out the 1,100 seated Eisenhower Theatre. Five minutes?

Acclaimed French director Olivier Assayas' (Paris, Je T'aime) newest film, makes subtle yet poignant remarks about family relationships along with stunning visuals. When their mother dies, siblings must decide what to do with their family's estate. Keep it for their children or sell its contents to famous museums (like the Musee d'Orsay) and move on with their lives? The film is an understated commentary on human priorities.

"best summer jam"

Baltimore's CityPaper named Mullyman's "Party Walk" the best summer jam. Agreed. Subsequently, I just discovered "BMore Go Harder" also by Mullyman and featuring Jay-Z.
Both are great tracks, especially if you share my Baltimore pride.

nowadays folk would rather rap than go to school

there are few people's musical judgments that i trust. so when a friend of mine with impeccable taste in music told me about a new Atlanta rapper, B.O.B, i was eager to listen. and i'm glad i did. i know very little about rap, so i'll let his own bio do the explaining, but i urge everyone to listen to this guy. he is absolutely great. and now that's finally summer, this is the perfect music to listen to on the beach, at a party, wherever the weather is warm.

Barry Levinson's most recent "film essay," POLIWOOD, addresses the hyperreality the media has created within politics. As seen most clearly in the 2008 presidential campaign, Hollywood has infiltrated politics. Obama was criticized for being a celebrity, not a legitimate presidential candidate, by the McCain campaign, and for one of the first times, Hollywood celebrities came out in hordes to endorse their presidential choice, whether it was for Obama or McCain.

POLIWOOD follows actors (including Matthew Modine, Susan Saradon, Rachel Leigh Cook, Josh Lucas, and Anne Hathaway) in conjunction with The Creative Coalition as they try learn more about politics, and understand how their voices both hurt and help. Throughout the film, celebrities are constantly criticized for viewing themselves as lofty and important, though mass society believes they are using their platform improperly and know no more than anyone else. This raises the question of celebrity power and mass resentment by the public.

Levinson makes a poignant example with his film, a scary idea that everything we encounter is filtered through a glossy media counterpart.

singer/songwriters pop up all the time. some are worth our time and many are not. this may be a shameless plug for a friend, but Matt Dunne is one singer/songwriter who is worth your time. a little bit jason mraz mixed with some of dispatch's rhymes, and completely melodic.
